There are still a lot of opportunities out there that allow you to get in some volunteer time, but with no long-term commitment. It does take a little bit of research to find those places, but here's some ideas to get you started.
L?'ahi Millenium Peace Garden
A Hawaiian plant maintenance activity that includes weeding, mulching, watering and, on rare occasions, planting. Just pitching in to keep the garden clean is a big help.

Adults Friends for Youth
The Adult Friends for Youth (AFY) are looking for volunteers to help with the 23rd annual fundraiser, one of the biggest fundraisers on O'ahu.

Invasive Algae Removal
Keep the water clean by helping to remove the invasive algae in Maunalua Bay.

Hawai'i Nutritional & Physical Activity Coalition
Two volunteers to help set up visual, registration table and ballot tally. Lunch will be provided.

Talk About Curing Autism
TACA is looking for people to help with registration, set-up and clean up for its monthly events. One time volunteers is OK as well.
