This month, the Office of Student Activities will be hosting seven different events. Some are new, while others are familiar to students.

According to Alfie Gonzales, assistant coordinator of student activities, there are five remaining events for the month of February: 'Ohana Craft Fair (Monday, Feb. 8), Valentine's Day dance (Friday, Feb. 12), the popular ice cream social (Monday, Feb. 16), slam poetry contest (Monday, Feb. 22) and a video game competition (Friday, Feb. 26).

Events such as the Valentine's dance and the video game competition (this month's game will be "Super Smash Brothers Brawl" for the Wii) are new additions to the OSA calendar.

"We hope that the dance and video game contests will reach out to more students," said Gonzales. "These events are giving more opportunities for students to get involved on campus."

The ideas for the events are usually generated through meetings with OSA and the board of student activities.

"We work together to figure out what events we're going to have," Gonzales said. "The board of student activities dictates our budget and from there, we start to think, 'What do the students want to see?' We also look at traditions, like the ice cream social."

Gonzales said that of all the events, the ice cream social is always a hit.

"That's our most popular event," he said. "Who doesn't love free ice cream?"

Liberal arts major Cory Baldonro, 19, makes plans to attend the ice cream social but misses them.

"I wanted to go, but I keep missing it," she said. "I think it's good that we have these events. That's how they get us students interested."

Filipe Palma, 31, does not get to witness or participate in many events because he's raising a child. However, he does not mind paying these fees if other people will enjoy being at them.

"It does not affect me personally, but if it's going to help others and if they're going to have a good time, then sure, the fees we pay are going to good use," said Palma.
